Product/Technology: ZF unveils TraXon - a new automatic transmission for heavy-duty trucks and coaches

Germany - TraXon is the name of a new and highly modular automatic transmission for heavy-duty trucks and coaches from ZF Friedrichshafen AG, launched by the German component supplier at its headquarters in Friedrichshafen, last month. Production of TraXon is to start at the end of 2013 in readiness for market in the first quarter of 2014. ZF's ASTronic, which TraXon replaces, will be offered at Euro 6, but phased out at this emission standard as TraXon is phased in. ZF's management and engineering teams explained that the new TraXon automatic transmission system is very flexible and is made up of a base transmission that can be coupled with five drive modules: a single or double-disk clutch; a dual-clutch module; a hybrid module; an engine-dependant PTO, and a torque converter clutch.
