Allison helps Torotrak moves closer towards production of gearless traction drive for heavy commercial vehicles

UK/USA - Torotrak Plc of Leyland, UK has announced that commercial vehicle transmissions supplier, Allison Transmission Inc of Indianapolis, Indiana, USA, has agreed to invest an additional sum of GBP8m (USD13.2m) in Torotrak to aid further development of its gearless traction drive technology and take it closer to commercial production, Dick Elsy, chief executive at Torotrak, said: "This agreement with Allison to develop a production-ready design is a big step towards putting Torotrak's technology into vehicles where it can realise significant fuel savings and emissions reductions for industry." Torotrak says that its gearless traction drive technology (GTD) has shown fuel savings in excess of 10 per cent in trucks and buses, and that in urban applications, where there is a high proportion of stop-and-go driving, the savings are even greater.
