In our March cover story, Editor at Large Sean Ottewell examined how chemical manufacturers are finally effectively utilizing production data to improve reliability. The turning point, according to SAP Senior Solution Specialist John Harrison: "Our chemical customers told us that they had been collecting operational information for years and they believed that there was 'gold' in the data, but they lacked the capability to quickly bring multiple sources of data together and to transform the data into actionable information." The chain of events that followed ultimately led to reliability enhancements at such operating companies as Salahal Methanol Company, Honeywell Performance Materials & Technologies, and BASF.
