A potential catalyst for change from road to rail transportation of UK bound freight is being introduced to the growing French port of Calais. Long distance haulage of goods across Europe towards Britain by road could soon be challenged by a piece of technology that allows lorry semi trailer freight wagons to be loaded onto railway trains quickly and easily. Freight transfer stations built using the 'CargoBeamer' concept allow articulated road vehicles to transfer their trailers on to a freight train without the need for containers to be lifted by crane. CargoBeamer will soon start operating in the port of Calais within a dedicated terminal to be built at a nearby logistics park known as Calais Premier.
