Fuel price: What influence on traffic demand?

Road network operators need accurate forecasts of traffic levels. Ruth Bridger investigates fuel price and other factors as influencers of demand for road space. During the period from 1993 to 1999 taxation on fuel was justified as a means for reducing demand for road space. Questions relating to the success of this policy and whether fuel price can be used to forecast traffic levels have been raised at several meetings of the CIHT Network Management & Operations Panel. Members of this panel are responsible for overseeing traffic movement at the local and national level - understanding and forecasting traffic demand are important aids to their work.
