A unique study has found a good way of gaining public support for street or urban improvement designs -get stakeholders involved in the design work. This paper is by Professor Peter Jones of UCL. Many traffic engineers will be familiar with situations where a proposal to redesign a busy urban street triggers a strong negative reaction once it goes to public consultation - often resulting in the scheme being dropped. Given that experience, it may seem strange to be advocating more rather than less public involvement, but a well organised, comprehensive public engagement process can help to minimise rather than exacerbate such problems.
