Roads Service holds to its plan for major projects

Innovative contract procurement is a feature of road upgrade developments in Northern Ireland, where Roads Service is pursuing best value for a massive programme of improvements. In recent months Northern Ireland's Roads Service has announced its preferred route for dualling the A5 from Londonderry to the Irish border, while Amey Lagan Roads has pushed on with 'DBFO 2' (see box page 16). Northern Ireland's Investment Delivery Plan (IDP) for roads is progressing - with a less certain future, but currently on course all the same and with some innovative and large scale projects. The A5 'Deny to Aughnacloy' scheme -88km of mostly off line construction of new dual carriageway - stands out as the largest project within Northern Ireland's ￡3Bn, 10 year roads plan. This ramps up spending to a peak of around ￡600M in 2013/14 (from ￡178M in 2008/09). The A5 upgrade and other major projects should be well under way by then, providing the axe does not fall on the funding.
