Overcoming difficult ground

Transportation Professional's Update feature is a regular column reporting each month on a specific subject of interest to the UK transportation sector. This month's Update reports successful engineering and use of innovative products to support transport infrastructure over difficult ground. The industry has been delivering the goods for overcoming problems associated with poor ground conditions and tight deadlines. For instance, Tensar's TriAx geogrid has fairly revolutionised ground stabilisation, while in Lewes, East Sussex, Amey's design team has specified a settlement system for the A66 Long Newton project near Darlington that is both innovative and effective. TriAx was launched this time last year (Transportation Professional June 2007) and Tensar has since picked up a couple of awards and sold about 1.5M.m{sup}2 of its triaxial geogrid. Recently, contractor Leiths has used TriAx to stabilise 3500m2 of ground for a transport park in Skelmersdale in only 10 days - achieving significant time and cost savings.
