Modern turbine oils are characterized by longer-life and higher temperature performance criteria which can he evaluated determining thermo-oxidation stability. Traditionally, long established oxidation test such as TOST (ASTM) 943-03) and RPVOT (ASTM D) 2272-02) have been used to screen the thermo-oxidation stability of turbine oils. The recent gas turbine oil developments of oil companies have been concentrated on the satisfaction and fulfilment of required extremely high RPVOT/TOST values only, but not on the real-life operations conditions. The currently used bench tests are not able to fulfil the state-of-the-art bench testing requirements. Adequate bench test procedures of thermo-oxidation stability should have to simulate the real operation conditions and their results should correlate with real-life turbine oil conditions. In this paper new bench testing procedures will be presented and recommended in future for the evaluation of thermo-oxidation stability of modern generation turbine lubricants.
