Coventry champions the cycle as a positive lifestyle choice: Transport's role in keeping people healthy, and not just mobile, is being explored fully in Coventry, a city with a rich cycle heritage

Cast aside any prejudices you may have against Coventry for a moment, a city famed for its concrete high rise buildings and busy ring road. If council officials succeed in their ambitions the city's name will once again become shorthand for a mode of travel it began manufacturing around 150 years ago: the bicycle. Work began in 2012 to create over 32km of cycle route linking central Coventry with residential suburbs and employment districts to the west and north east of the city. Aside from new infrastructure local people are being recruited to offer travel advice to 12,000 of city's 133,000 households through the concept of personalised travel planning. Part of their aim is to encourage more people to ride a bicycle rather than drive a car for short journeys.
