Improvements to the A1 and A19 either side of Tyneside promise an end to severe traffic congestion locally. Notorious congestion bottlenecks on major routes around Newcastle and Gateshead are to be relieved with highway improvement schemes on either fringe of the North East's foremost urban conurbation. To the east, the A19 trunk road will be sunk into the ground to avoid snarl ups at a major highway intersection. And on the opposite side of the two cities the A1 Gateshead Western Bypass is to be widened and parallel link roads built to separate out local traffic from long distance vehicles. Both schemes are being taken forward by the Highways Agency to reduce journey times and improve road safety. But an added benefit offered by the pair is the opportunity to stimulate economic growth.
