What future is there for public transport?

Need for better public transport to reduce car use and improve accessibility is well known, but how much has been achieved in transforming bus and rail services? At a time when the UK is going through an economic down turn, savings in personal travel costs should be possible through good public transport services. But only 10% of trips are made via public transport in Britain1. Economic motivation and focused marketing by transport operators should be attracting new customers. But for many the decision to leave the car in the garage is still a long way off. This paper investigates reasons why.
