Urine collection systems: the need for change

The self-retaining catheter was developed in the 1930s without recognising the need to preserve the antibacterial mechanisms of the bladder. Professor Feneley discusses how future research should be seeking a urine collection system that enables the bladder to fill and empty regularly and completely, thus mimicking the wash-out effect of the healthy bladder. He provides an example of the way in which new technologies can improve the quality of life for the catheter user.
