Every weekend across the U.S.,log splitters and chain saws rev as community volunteers and arbor-ists come together to process free firewood for people in need. The firewood programs - known regionally as wood banks, firewood ministries or charity cuts - are similar in concept to a food bank. They start small, a few passionate folks helping a neighbor fill an empty woodpile.
