Research in travel medicine and emerging regions: The need for teaching how to publish

Research in travel medicine is becoming an important aspect of scientific endeavour in all regions of the World.1 In emerging regions, such as Latin America,2 significant advances in establishing the speciality have reached important milestones during the last 7 years. The creation of a Latin American Society for Travel Medicine (Sociedad Latin-oamericana de Medicina del Viajero, SLAMVI, http://www. slamviweb.org) has stimulated and reinforced education and training, especially through continuing medical education in the practice of travel medicine and its related disciplines, and through encouraging research and scientific publication.3 Training courses and workshops that teach and enhance skills in how to publish research in travel medicine are vital for such developing global regions in encouraging improved standards of travel medicine practice.We are pleased therefore to draw attention to the recently held XVIII International Congress for Tropical Medicine and Malaria, XLVIII Congress of the Brazilian Society of Tropical Medicine and 3rd Latin American Congress of Travel Medicine, which took place in Rio de Janeiro, on 23-27. 2012.
