Stem-girdling roots. They've always been one of the tree problems that arborists have had to diagnose and, when practical, treat. In the olden days, when I was a young arborist, the trunk flares were visible on most of the trees we encountered in the landscape. The occasional girdling root we noticed was easily dispatched with a mallet and chisel, or in cases where the tree was inits death throes, the SGR (stem girdling root) was simply cited as the cause of death with no further questioning.
