Antibodies of undetermined significance: Nuisance or near miss?

AUoimmunization to non-ABO blood group antigens remains a clinically significant problem for blood banks and transfusion services.1 In addition to the potential for delays in processing antigen-negative red blood cell (RBC) units, blood group antibodies can be associated with significant morbidity and mortality if incompatible units are inadvertently infused. In fact, hemolytic transfusion reactions due to non-ABO antigens were the second-leading cause of transfusion-associated mortality reported to the Food and Drug Administration in 2011.
