Platelet concentrates prepared from whole blood are suspended in 40-70 ml of plasma which maintains the pH of the component [ 1 ]. When these random donor platelets (RDP) are transfused, a large amount of plasma (approximately 300 ml in an adult dose of six units) is additionally transfused. This plasma is a potential source of coagulation factors. The level of coagulation factors in plasma also varies with the ABO group of a person [2]. In this pilot study we planned to assess the levels of various coagulation factors at different storage periods in RDP and to ascertain the variation in levels of coagulation factors with ABO blood group in our donor population.
