Helicopter aids transmission mapping and asset management: a forward-thinking utility has what it takes to economically update aging records

Two years ago, Kansas City Power & Light (KCPL) of Kansas City, Missouri, U.S., embarked on a project to correct 30 years of sub-par record and mapping updates on its transmission Systems. Although KCPL's transmission line layout did not change significantly in this period, the terrain underneath the lines underwent a complete metamorphosis. Former farm, pasture and forest land had evolved into a complex network of suburbs, streets, shopping centers, highways and parks.
