Network engineers are continuously searching for better ways to eliminate the possibility of a single point-of-failure from causing a communications network to fail either partially or completely. As networks become increasingly more complex, the technical problems associated with a single point-of-failure and the innovative and cost effective ways of eliminating them have become a major issue within the communications engineering community. This is particularly true in terms of improvement of system reliability, availability, maintainability and the minimization of downtime.
