Better knowledge and use of commercial initiatives will help promote improved interoperability, enhanced functionality and low costs for ITS. The December 2006/January 2007 issue featured an article detailing interoperability for wireless communications. It concluded that while wireless technologies have advantages for many applications, some ITS applications are best implemented with fiber or wire technologies. Here, we discuss a vital emerging trend: the use of Ethernet in commercial and ITS communication infrastructure, with focus not just on wire and fiber/optical links, but also wireless access and microwave backhaul.
