I'm always on the look-out for tools that make sharpening a knife easier than others. Diamond stones and steels are a very good example when compared to the old days when carborumdum stones ruled. Diamond stones are actually made from diamonds that are called monocrystalline diamonds, which are too small for traditional jewellery. The largest are normally no more than 60 microns in size. However, they are high quality stones - akin to gravel if you like - but they are not fractured. Some sharpeners use the dust, a by-product from grinding stones, for jewellery. They are also very good. Others are made from polycrystalline, which are fractured micro-stones and are reputed to be not as durable as monocrystalline diamonds, which are uniform in size and are the preferred product.
