The main objectives of intelligent transportation systems (ITS) are to improve safety, increase traffic flow, decrease congestion, reduce fuel costs and enhance the response time of the emergency services. ITS technology is complex and incorporates numerous components, technologies and subsystems, which are all controlled and operated by the local traffic management center (TMC). One of the most basic examples of a single subsystem managed by a TMC is a tunnel fault detection system. However, this application may include other subsystems, such as a ramp metering controller, traffic cameras, highway segment speed metrics, traffic signal controllers, and weather information.
