The International Federation for Heat Treatment and Surface Engineering (IFHTSE) was founded in 1972. IFHTSE is a federation of 25 national scientific and technical societies and associations. IFHTSE does not have individual persons as members; instead it is composed of 25 national members. Some of the countries represented in IFHTSE are: China, Russia, UK, Germany, France, Sweden, and the USA. Among the stated objectives of IFHTSE, one of the most important is to facilitate international discussion on important issues in the science, practice, and application of heat treating and surface engineering. This is great, you might say, but what does it mean to me if there are no individual members? What does IFHTSE have to do with me, my job, and my career development? Why do I even care? It is my objective to address these questions in this brief message to you.
