We examine the influence of the parameters of the pressure that is generated in the discharge channel by a high-voltage electric discharge in water in reducing the residual stresses. It is shown that the level of the reduction of the residual stresses is determined by the magnitude of the pressure impulse. We present a technique for calculating the parameters of the pressure impulse in the discharge channel. We perform an experimental evaluation of the influence of the amplitude of the pressure in the discharge channel in lowering the residual tensile stresses in the metal specimens. It is established that the effectiveness of the reduction of the residual stresses is basically determined by the magnitude of the pressure impulse and is practically independent of the maximal pressure in the discharge channel.
