The purpose of using solar-reflective coatings is to reflect a significant amount of solar radiation from coloured surfaces to keep them cooler. Cooler surfaces are beneficial to materials and users in many ways. They can help to reduce energy costs through lower demand for air conditioning in hot climates. Thermal stress in constructional materials is reduced, thus contributing to a better durability of temperature-sensitive materials. Cooler surfaces are desirable for people in work or leisure activities when applied on clothing, helmets or other objects that may cover or come into contact with human skin. Finally, some national restrictions or regulations already enforce the application of solar-reflective surfaces with a view to protecting the environment, limiting the so-called Urban Heat Island Effect.
