Zinc oxide has been used extensively in the coatings industry as a pigment and anit-fungal agent for many years.However the use of zinc oxide in transparent coatings has been limited due to the opacity of the particles as well as the ease of use in formulations.The opacity of the particles is a direct function of scattered light which can be significantly reduced by using an oxide that has a msmalle rparticle size,is free of agglomerates,and has a narrow size distribution.A number of different ways have been developed over the last decade to manufacture micronised powders,ranging form comminution tovapour processes.The different producton tehcniques impart different characteristics to the particles and it is important to understand how these differences will affect the final formulation.with the majority of wood coatings,the real effect of adding in UV protectants can be substantiated by weathering tests,This pape rdemonstrates the effectiveness of APT's nano Z~TM as a UV protectant in wood coatings.
