Titanium dioxide aggregation in water based paint films

Titanium dioxide is the most important white pigment currently used in the world, with a total annual production capacity about five million tons(l). Titanium dioxide is used widely in the paint, papermak-ing, plastic, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries due to its outstanding physico-chemical properties. The paint industry is the largest titanium dioxide consumer using nearly 60% of the global pigment consumption(2). Statutory regulations have forced paint users to make increasing use of more environmentally-friendly coating systems, which is why water based coatings are particularly attractive. To achieve the optimum visual and economical benefits of a pigment, the dispersion process is critical; the degree to which the pigment particles are dispersed is indeed a major factor in the quality and stability of the finished paint products.
