This is the third paper discussing the chemistry of Adhesion Promoters, and is Part 5.3 of Adrian Thomas' multi-part "Adhesion and its importance in the coatings industry (including paint, ink, powder coatings, texture coatings, adhesives, sealants, abrasives, etc...)" series. It continues from Part 5.2which was published in the June 2013 edition of Surface Coatings Australia Keywords: Adhesion promoters, Coupling agents, Functional silanes, Organo silicon compounds, Siloxanes 9.2.2.2.2.3 Incorporation of organofunctional silanes If we then look at how these organofunctional silanes are incorporated into polymer based systems, looking at the various literature, there appear to be three ways: 1.Polymer modification 2.Integral blending 3.Filler and surface pre-treatment. 9.2.2.2.2.3.1 Polymer modification Because the silane is organofunctional, the organofunctional group can be used to silylate (i.e. introduce a usually silyl group, such as R3Si) to a polymer including acrylics, polyesters, epoxies, urethanes, polyolefins, etc.
