Nanomaterials and their significance in the coatings market

Nanomaterials (nanocrystalline materials) are materials possessing grain sizes on the order of a billionth of a metre. When matter is arranged in the form of small particles that have diameters of a few nanometers, materials sometimes take on different physical properties than when in their normally occurring state. The study of nanomaterials will have far-reaching effects in the technological developments of paints and coatings systems in the next decade, and may lead to the design of new ranges of functional or "smart" materials.
