Background: The usage of cyto-protective agents becomes standard in simultaneous chemoradiotherapy of head and neck cancer patients. Experimental data [Patchenet al. 1990]suggest that the combination of selenium and amifostine has a high potential in radioprotection. Material and methods: In an ongoing 3 arm pilot study we investigated the clinical and chemical efficacy of cytoprotection with selenium and/or amifostine in this patient subgroup. An interims analysis with 73 patients should be presented at the meeting.
