A much repeated lament in exploration for stratiform orebodies in volcanic environments is the difficulty caused by complex lateral and vertical facies changes in the correlation of stratigraphy, particularly the ore-equivalent horizon. While some of this difficulty may be more imagined than real, more significant problems arise when the palaeovolcanic style is wrongly interpreted. In the Iberian Pyrite Belt, for example, the two competing models (volcanic pile versus sill-sediment complex) for the Volcano-Sedimentary Complex (VSC) host rocks make very different predictions for the location of the ore-equivalent horizon.
