Before I address the question of global comparisons, let me show how I might be qualified to express an opinion. For some 43 years I have been in the mechanical engineering field, commencing as a draftsman, through design, project manager, consultant to technocrat. I personally have been involved in recruitment, training and development, worked on design teams and acted as a mentor to engineers in Australia and 16 other countries. During my career I have been directly involved with the training and development, mentoring, etc, of many mechanical engineering graduates. For the last 15 years I have visited engineering houses, consultants, mining and other industries in about 30 countries.
