摘要

Among their multidisciplinary requirements, intelligent processing of materials (IPM) require on-line quality assessment through nondestructive evaluation (NDE) sensors with a provision for feedback control based on NDE parameters. Application of nondestructive techniques for comprehensive characterization of microstructures, deformation processes, residual stresses and defects in relation to IPM are discussed in this paper with specific examples taken from the investigations carried out at Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, Kalpakkam. The concepts of IPM and progress made in this direction internationally is briefly reviewed. The specific activities undertaken in India under the Department of Science and Technology (DST) project on IPM are presented. The future directions for adoption of IPM in high tonnage industries like forming and welding industries are also highlighted.
