Landscape Architecture in Germany

Landscape architecture in Germany is based on a long tradition. The range of both education and professional practice is diverse. It includes the design of public and private open spaces and large scale urban planning projects as well as aspects of nature conservation and landscape planning. The term "landscape architecture" was formed in the USA in the mid-19th century and was first used in Europe in the early 20th century. In Germany, landscape architecture and the activities of landscape architects have their origins in the work of the Prussian Garden Director General Peter Joseph Lenne (1789-1863). Lenne professionalised the occupation of gardening and was first to attempt the development of a general job description for an academic profession.
