Joanne McLeod was the first woman on the CPA National Board, first female Executive Director in the CPA and first female National Director. She was also an influential advocate of disability rights in other forums. But she is the first to observe that, though the road was tough at times, there were others who wheeled it with her. "Don Curran of the Nova Scotia Association was, of course, an important mentor for me. So was J.D. Woods, who was Chairman of the CPA for years at that time and had been President. He was the one who convinced me to let my name stand for Vice-President. To start up here in New Brunswick, there was Dr. Toole, Chair of the Chemistry Department at UNB who didn't have anyone with a disability in his family but was interested. Bob Jones, the Chairman of the Workers Compensation Board in Saint John was our main man, our hardest worker, who really got the office going in Fredericton."
