CHARLENE STEVENS: Wheeling Back to the Island

Ms. Stevens moved back to work as Director of Nursing for We Care Home Health in October 2006. Within a couple of months, Myrtle Jenkins-Smith at CPA-PEI invited her to join the provincial CPA board of directors and Charlene agreed. "CPA does wonderful work and they really have brought a lot of issues out that otherwise would not have been recognized. I am the only female on the board who is paralyzed, so I can bring a different and valuable perspective." She has also brought new capabilities to the board. "We have recently developed a peer group on the board that can be called on to go out to a home and work with someone (see PEI input to Regional Reports in this issue). I have not personally been called on yet, but peer support can be crucial for someone who is newly injured or has a change of condition or circumstances, to show them what is out there for them and that they are not alone in their new situation."
