IT is necessary to check the flatness of the background surface before commencing tiling. Usually, any gap under a 2m straight-edge placed on the surface should not exceed 3mm. If this is not achieved then the surfaces should be trued up using appropriate materials, and the making good materials matured before tiling commences.
