Serial changes in liver function tests in patients with subacute thyroiditis.

Liver function test abnormalities are well known in untreated patients with thyrotoxicosis (1). Recently, our studies clarified that these abnormalities in hyperthyroid Graves' disease and painless thyroiditis were mainly induced by the metabolic effects of excess thyroid hormone (2). Subacute thyroiditis also induces thyrotoxicosis due to thyroid destruction; however, little is known about the abnormalities of liver function tests. We prospectively studied liver biochemical tests during the clinical course in 36 patients with subacute thyroiditis in order to clarify the prevalence and nature of liver function abnormalities.
