Diagnostics and therapy of a cat with nasal aspergillosis - case report and literature review.

A 1-year-old spayed female cat with signs of sneezing, ocular and nasal discharges and conjunctivitis is reported. The cat showed no clinical improvement after several weeks of antibiotic and symptomatic therapy. Radiography, computed tomography, rhinoscopy, histopathological and mycological examinations were conducted. Endoscopic examination showed white-gray masses in the nasopharynx. Fungal culture revealed growth of Aspergillus fumigatus. Mycotic nasal plugs were extracted endoscopically. Systemic treatment with itraconazole was initiated and the nasal cavity was flushed with 1% clotrimazole solution under general anesthesia. The animal completely recovered after the treatment. It is concluded that nasal aspergillosis is a rare infectious disease in the cat, and it should always be considered as differential diagnosis in animals with chronic rhinitis.
