Investigation on localization and dignity of mammary tumours in bitches with multiple mammary neoplasia.

The study was conducted to determine the correlation between canine mammary gland tumour malignancy and location. Data from 103 mastectomized bitches with multiple mammary tumours were analysed. The location and histopathology of each tumour were determined. Tumours were found more frequently (P<0.0001) on the caudal mammary glands compared to those in the cranial. In 81.5% of the cases, the tumours were malignant. Only 9.7% of the patients had benign tumours. In 3.9% of the tumours, only hyper-/dysplasias were found. The percentage of malignant tumours with respect to location did not differ statistically. This is valid for the whole mammary gland (p=0.844) and for both sides of the mammary gland (left side: p=0.819; right side: p=0.503). Statistically significant correlations were found between the malignancy of tumours in adjacent mammary glands (p<0.0001), but there was no positive correlation between tumours being located in the same complexes of different sides (p>0.05). This condition seems to be in correlation with the individual lymph drainage of each side of the mammary gland. The majority of bitches with multiple mammary gland tumours (80%) have one tumour fulfilling the criteria of malignancy.
