Intestinal impaction and fibrinous peritonitis following perforation ofthe intestinal wall by a piece of mire [German]

A four year old Simmental cow, with a history of anorexia and a severe decrease in milk yield over the previous 24 hours, was hospitalised. The clinical examination indicated an ileus. Intussusception, intestinal impaction and intestinal adhesion were considered us potential causes. On laparotomy, intestinal impaction and fibrinous peritonitis were found. The instestinal wall of the distal jejunum was perforated by a piece of wire, some 6 cm in length. Apart from the presence of connective tissue between the abomasum and the ventral abdominal wall, no further evidence of intestinal wall damage was found.
