To characterize physiological variables in stickler calves of different developmental quality and fitness (haemoglobin content of blood low=HbG1, moderate=HbG2 and high=HbG3) at early growth with unlimited food access, on suckler calves (36 German Red Pied, 5 German Black Pied, 17 male and 24 female) measurements of body weight and blood composition were done repeatedly. Mean birth weight was not different between groups. Growth rate of calves of HbG1 and creatinine concentration of calves of HbG2 were smaller then that of calves of the other two groups. Creatinine concentration significantly affected haemoglobin content of blood and plasma iron concentration. Hb, Hct, MCHC, O2CAP and O2CONT were significantly different between the calves of the three groups. In case of O2CAP, nor adrenalin and plasma iron concentration calves of HbG1 were significantly different from those of HbG2 and HbG3. There were strong correlations between O2CONT and O2SAT with different regression coefficients in calves of the three Hb-groups. Significant correlations of plasma iron concentration and Hb, Hct and O2CAP could be established explaining 59% to 61% of the variation of that measures.
