Culling reasons of sows - aetiology and prophylaxis.

From November 2004 to November 2005, postmortem examination of dead and culled sows from 4 sow herds in Lower Saxony, Germany, was conducted. Eighty percent of the mortality were not caused by infectious diseases, 13.8% of which were due to lameness. Overall, only 15 of the 56 dead and culled sows were brought to the Pathology Department of the institute for postmortem examination. This shows that the will of the farmers to bring sows to the institute for postmortem examination is low.
