Atrial fibrillation (AF) is associated with a pro-thrombotic state and increased risk of stroke . However, the relation between AF and fibrinolytic activity is presently unclear. Elevated levels of both tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) and plasminogen activator inhibitor type 1 (PAI-1) have been found in patients with AF [3-5], thus the net effect on fibri-nolysis may be conjectural
