Shorter recanalisation times are associated with improved clinical outcome in patients with deep vein thrombosis [1]. Treatments that accelerate thrombus resolution without haemorrhagic side effects are therefore highly desirable. Natural thrombus resolution is a combination of contraction of the thrombus away from the vein wall, inflammatory cell infiltration, and the formation of new vascular channels [2]. Stimulating this angiogenic process could therefore lead to faster recanalisation times, improved valve integrity, and reduced post-thrombotic complications [3-5].
