Pregnancy is a hypercoagulable state associated with a risk of venous thromboembolism(VTE) that is three to five times that of a non-pregnant woman. The VTE risk is not just during pregnancy, but continues for six to eight weeks after delivery. Interestingly, the VTE risk is significantly higher in the postpartum period than during pregnancy.Women with a previous history of thrombosis are at increased risk for having a clot when pregnant. The risk of VTE recurrence without anticoagulation is up to 12% in some studies, but falls to a very low level with prophylaxis. Prophylactic anticoagulation for at risk patients during pregnancy is an effective and relatively safe measure
