Japan's FY 04 Ferrous Raw Materials Statuses

The Japan Ferrous Raw Materials Association recently worked out a report on Japan's supply-demand conditions for ferrous scrap and pig iron in fiscal 2004 (April 2004-March 2005) on the basis of its survey. The survey finds that the nation's supply volume of locally available ferrous scrap totaled 41,680,000 tons, which gives the impression that an era has arrived of the local ferrous scrap flow at an annual level of 40 million tons. Of the total, domestic shipments accounted for the first 34,930,000 tons, and export sales the remaining 6,750,000 tons. In particular, ferrous scrap demand perked up in LD converter operations at integrated steelworks. As a result, the blending ratio of ferrous scrap to pig iron for LD converter feed amounted to 11.1 percent on average in fiscal 2004.
