Nippon Steel, Sumitomo Metals and Mitsui & Co. jointly announced February 1 their decision to increase the port capacity of Cape Lambert in Western Australia from the current 57 Mt/a (nominally 55 Mt/a) to 80 Mt/a by the end of 2008. The port is servicing Robe River Iron Associate (RRIA) an unincorporated joint venture established with worldclass Anglo-Australian metals and mining company, Rio Tinto. With global strong iron ore demand especially from China in the background, the upgrade is "expected to bring additional revenues supported by incremental shipments, with an appropriate supply capability to meet demand being sought in parallel." (NSC). A total of approximately 860 million US dollars will be invested to implement the project.
