Five Norwegian female goats were inoculated subcutaneously with 2 ml of saline suspension containing 625/ml bradyzoite of T. gondii 71±2 days after mating. Four goats each received an intravenous injection of 1.5 X 108 Type 1 L. monocytogenes (in 5ml saline suspension) in the jugular vein on days 69-77 or 105-106 of pregnancy. All goats were examined regularly by ultrasonography. There was a gradual decrease of pregnancy-associated glycoprotein (PAG) in T. gondii-infected goats 55-74 days after inoculation. Afterwards, 4 goats aborted and 1 kidded 1 dead and 1 weak fetus. There was a marked decrease of PAG in L.monocytogenes-infected goats from the day of inoculation. Abortion occurred in 7 goats within 9-11 days after inoculation; 1 goat kiddeda healthy fetus. When the PAG profiles and the ultrasonography observations were interpreted for each goat, it was observed that trophoblastic alteration had occurred before fetal death.
